The Attack coaches live, eat and breath soccer and coaching soccer is their passion. The goal of Attack soccer is to instill that passion for the game not only in each player but in their families. Whether it’s teaching skills, game strategies, providing feedback and performance evaluations, or simply talking about the game, Attack coaches are committed to frequent and quality communication with the entire Attack family.

So who are the RSF Soccer Attack Coaches? Below are brief bios of the current lineup of talented men and women who make up the Attack coaching staff.

Coaching Staff

Malcolm Tovey, Director of Coaching

Heading up the coaching staff at RSF Soccer is one of the most well-known, respected and connected soccer coaches in Southern California. In his youth he played internationally for England at the under 19 level and came to the United States in the early 80s on an S.D.S.U. soccer scholarship, where he earned his Bachelors Degree as a double major in Social Studies and Physical Education. He has also earned his California Teaching Credential and has a Lifetime Teaching Credential from Keele University, England, in the same subjects.

Malcolm has turned this experience into a winning formula for the teams he has coached during his long career. Coming to Rancho Santa Fe Soccer in 1997 after 13 years at the Surf Soccer club and as their coaching director, he has notched up numerous State / National Championships and has won major Tournaments that include Surf Cup, Nomads Invitational, Huntington Beach, Pleasonton and many more.

From 1980 to 1994, Tovey was athletic director for The Children's School in La Jolla and currently, he is the boys soccer coach at The Bishop's School in La Jolla.

In a July 2004 Union Tribune article he was quoted as "When you combine good teachers and coaches with someone you can motivate, you have the entire package," Putting this philosophy into practice he has organized and led annual camps in many sports attracting thousands of fortunate youngsters from San Diego county and beyond.

Finally he empowers many fortunate players moving on from RSF Soccer through his network of connections with college coaches at all levels. In recent years he has placed players at Yale, Dartmouth, U.C.S.D., The Naval Academy, Fullerton, S.D.S.U., U.C. Santa Cruz, Point Loma Nazarene, U.C. Davis, Sonoma State, Boudin University, Mass, and the Mexican National Team.

Malcolm will happily tell anyone, “I am coaching youth soccer because it is the most fun, challenging and rewarding job in the world.

David Rowe, Assistant Director of Coaching GIrls

With Attack since 2001.  Previously 2 years with Bonita Rebels.  Soccer playing experience includes club soccer in Los Angeles and Arcadia High School.  His college soccer was played at San Diego State University where he earned a degree in Business Finance.

David has coached many successful teams to tournament titles and two State Cup finals.  David has numerous former players currently playing for Olympic Development Program regional and national teams.

David believes in the development of a strong foundation for the young player.  These include a strong work ethic, game awareness, team tactics, and individual skills and techniques.  David's goal is to maximize a player's potential while keeping their love of the game growing.  David holds a USSF National D license.

Peter Barker

With Attack since 1998. Previously, 5 years with Surf Soccer, 2 years with Escondido Earthquakes, 3 years with North County Alliance, and 5 years with Burnley Football Club Youth Program in England. Also, licensed referee in US and England. USSF ?D? License.

Peter grew up in England, playing high school football then serving five years as coach in the Burnley (Lancashire) Football Club Youth Program. Peter's devotion to honesty and good sportsmanship makes him a fitting coach for RSF. He has what it takes to teach our kids the values we all hold most dear. Parents whose kids have been coached by Peter have remarked about his patience and ability to instill a love of the game in his players.

Peter's stated philosophy is "For each player to achieve his or her fullest potential as a soccer player, individually and as a team member. and his goal is to ?develop mentally and physically each player on and off the playing field, to encourage family participation, team building and sportsmanship."

Shawn Beyer

Shawn's time in soccer has seen him selected twice to college All-America teams and a professional career with the K.C. Comets, Philadelphia Kixx and finally the San Diego Sockers. His love for the game has kept him coaching since 2001. He holds a USSF National "B" License along with a National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Local coaching history includes Santa Fe Christian H.S. Mens Head Coach, Encintas Express Head Coach and currently in 4th year with RSF Attack.

The opportunity to coach is his way of sharing "the world's greatest game" with young aspiring players. He considers it a privilege to play and an honor to coach.

Coach Shawn's Coaching Philosophy is:
To provide an environment and atmosphere for players to learn teamwork, sound soccer skills, positive attitude, and physical fitness to achieve team and individual goals. And of course, to have fun while doing it!

Gary Collier

Coaching at RSF Soccer since 2002, Gary comes with extensive experience as a coach and as a professional soccer player.

As a player:

  • 7 years playing for Bristol City in the English Premier and First divisions.
  • 1 year Coventry City, English Premier League
  • 3 years Portland Timbers of the NASL
  • 6 years San Diego Sockers

As a Coach:

  • Nomads for 1 year
  • Surf for 14 years

Gary possesses a USSF "B" license, and coaches with the philosophy: "Soccer has always been a big part of my life. My playing days are over, so to stay involved in the game I love, I began coaching. I would like to think that I have been able to pass on some of the things I learned while playing professionally. The thing that gives me most pleasure in coaching is seeing a players improvement through the season no matter what level they start out at i.e.; premier or rec. seeing a player with less natural ability at the beginning of the season, competing at the end of the year makes all the work worthwhile."

Paul Dougherty

Joined RSF Soccer 2008 season.
Paul Dougherty has a very busy and full biography. He played professional soccer for 19 years including the English Premier League, Major League Soccer, Major Indoor Soccer League, and Continental Indoor Soccer League, where he was the M.V.P. The former San Diego Sockers standout was for three seasons a coach with the Nomads where he won numerous tournaments with the Boys U15 including 2 Surf Cups, State Cup, Regional and U.S. Club soccer National Champions. Holds an USSF “A” license.



Goals and Philosophy:

  • Make the game enjoyable for the players
  • Teach the kids to become smart players
  • Have a good understanding of the game
  • Encourage sportsmanship and team play
  • Challenge the players to reach their full potential
  • Soccer should be enjoyed by all with the help of proper coaching and nurturing of the kids.

Mike Elenz-Martin

Mike joined RSF Attack for the 2008 season. Previously, he played club for Rancho Santa Fe Attack for three years while also playing for La Costa Canyon High School-winning the CIF Championship in 2000. He joined the SDSU soccer team in 2001. He played for Palomar Junior College soccer team for 1 year. He most recently played for the CSU Chico Wildcats (2 yrs), Chico Rooks (2 years-National Premier Soccer League) and the Sacramento Knights (1 year-National Premier Soccer League). His most memorable moment was playing against Deportivo Alaves in July of 2006. He is a high energy player with great soccer skills with a tenacious mindset. He is eager to coach these young men and to encourage a learning environment with a love for the game. Coach Mike holds a USSF National "D" Coaching License.

Goals and Philosophy:

  • For each player to achieve their fullest potential as a soccer player, individually and as a team member
  • Lead challenging and engaging training sessions that require effort with an emphasis on positive reinforcement
  • To encourage family participation, team building, sportsmanship and respect for all those around you

Andy Hargreaves

Coach Hargreaves comes to Attack this year after 8 seasons with the Del Mar Sharks; the past 3 as the Director of the Older Boys and Girls programs. He has been the Varsity Coach at Torrey Pines High School for the last 11 years. He coached for both the Nomads and the Surf in the past. Andy came up through the Blackburn Rovers Youth Program in England and played for Lancashire Schools FC. He graduated from Pt. Loma Nazarene University where he was a player for the 4 years he was there. Andy holds a USSF D license.

Nate Hetherington

Warren Jacobs

With Attack since 2002, Warren comes with 28 years of coaching experience both Club and High schools: 11 with Surf Soccer, 11 with Vista Storm, two with Villa Soccer and with High schools: Torrey Pines, University City, Vista and Rancho Buena Vista. Warren organized and ran the Soccer Skills Academy in Northern California for 12 summers. His playing experience includes UCSD and Surf Men's Premier. He possesses a USSF "B" License.

Warren Jacobs says he coaches youth soccer because he "loves the sport and coaching is a creative and progressive activity." His stated Philosophy is: "Soccer is fun. Playing better is more fun Playing well and winning is the most fun. Developing healthy relationships, learning to train in a disciplined way, respecting teammates and authorities, learning to become successful." His biggest goal he says is "for players to love the game, want to play again, to enjoy their teammates, and to get better."

Warren is married, 13 years ("wonderful and happy" he adds); has 2 kids; teaches Advanced Chemistry and Earth Science at Rancho Buena Vista HS, 25 years; surfs, backpacks; and Completed a graduate program in Sports Psychology at SDSU.

Mike Jones

Joined RSF Soccer 2008 season.

Previously, 8 years as Coach and Asst. Director of Coaching at Encinitas Express. He was an AYSO Head Coach for ten years and coached various ages including one county champion team. He has played for local 1st and 2nd division teams for the past 27 years and played high school varsity soccer at Kearny & Mira Mesa High Schools. Coached the La Costa Canyon High School Girls JV & Freshmen teams since 2003. Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his teams. He holds a USSF “E” license.

Goals and Philosophy:

I believe that we have a much bigger responsibility to the kids that goes beyond teaching them the game of soccer. Teaching them to respect their teammates, their parents, their opponents, and themselves will serve them both on and off the field. Learning to win and lose humbly is also something that I believe is important. I do what I do because I love both the kids and the game.

Jimmy Murphy

Coach Murphy holds a USSF "D" license and has been coaching at RSF since 1999. Prior to Attack, he was a coach at Surf for 2 years, and before that Bonita Rebels for 2 years. Jimmy's girls high school coaching experience has included 4 years as head coach at Santa Fe Christian, 2 years as an assistant coach at Eastlake and 1 year as an assistant coach at Bonita Vista. Currently, Jimmy is the assistant coach at Cathedral Catholic.

Since 2005, Jimmy has focused primarily on the older age groups and has successfully aided in placing a large number of girls in college/university programs. He has very good relationships with numerous college coaches throughout the country as well as the ability to get his teams into various showcase tournaments.

Jimmy is very passionate about helping girls/young ladies reach the next level, finding the right school for each player academically, athletically and socially. He sets goals for his players. One of the goals is to teach his players how to showcase their talents and have a better understanding of the game. Jimmy has his players playing different positions as well as different formations on the field so they are more rounded when they move on to the next level.

Philosophy

Coach Murphy's philosophy is to get the most out of each player. Jimmy wants to see each player set goals for themselves and put the time and effort into achieving them.

Charlie O'Neil

Charlie joined RSF Soccer?s competitive coaching staff in the 2007 season. Charlie comes with extensive coaching experience previously with Del Mar Sharks for 9 years, where many of his teams won high-ended tournaments. He has taken several teams through the ranks to Presidio League Premier Level and also the prestigious Coast League. Some previous players are now either part of the ODP program or the National Team selection at Youth Level.

Before coming to the USA from Scotland in 1996, Charlue had played soccer at the highest levels. Coming through the ranks at an early age, he played in the Glasgow Celtic youth program, later transfering to the pro ranks where he played for many years before hanging up his boots.

He then decided he could utilize his experience in the present day youth soccer development. He has coached ever since in Scotland and here in the USA.

  • To help each child achieve their own full potential
  • To create a fun and challenging atmosphere
  • To help each child use the qualities they learn in soccer in their future lives, whether this be consideration of others, sportsmanship or being a team player.

Enrique Rodriguez

Enrique joins RSF Attack for the 2008 season. Previously, he played for Escondido High, all four years on Varsity – placing 2nd runner up in CIF.  After playing soccer at Palomar College, he became the youngest coach ever hired by the Nomads and led his teams to win their Thanksgiving Tournament (among others) and place 1st in league play.  He referees soccer and coaches the CYSO in his spare time.

Goals and Philosophy:

Enrique states, “If the kids don’t succeed then I don’t succeed.”

Jase Scarvaci

Jase Scarvaci started coaching full time with attack for the 2008 season. He has been involved with Attack and Academy soccer however for 18 years as  player and assistant coaching. Jase played Premier Soccer with Attack for 11 years then moved on to play at Sonoma State University.

He has completed  2 years of professional coaching and holds a USSF "D" National Coaching License.

Jase was also an Olympic Development player with experience abroad.

Goals and Philosophy:

  • For each player to achieve their potential both as a player and team mate
  • Increase skills, confidence and physical ability
  • Lead fun and productive training sessions with an emphasis on confidence, participation and skill development

Alyssa Sobolik

Alyssa is excited to join the RSF Attack soccer club and hopes to bring the wealth of knowledge she has acquired over the years playing for top coaches like Jerry Smith (SCU women's soccer coach and former National Team Coach) and Eric Yamamoto (SCU men's coach and member of the US National Team Coaching staff for many years).

Alyssa is a graduate of Santa Clara University, and their Soccer team, from 2001-2005. She was the starting goalkeeper of their 2001 National Champion Broncos team. For her career, she tallied 109 saves and had a career goals-against-average of 0.88, posting a career record of 33-8-5 with 14 shutouts.

Sobolik coached at USD, one of the youngest Goalkeeper coaches in the NCAA Div 1. Other experience included Surf Soccer Club, personal goalkeeper trainer for many years, Danville Mustang Soccer Club, and SCU summer camps instructing youth soccer players on the fundamentals of playing soccer.

A few words about the coaching body, it's organization and responsibilities.

Director of Coaching and his assistants

A full-time professional under contract with the Club. The director of coaching serves as a consultant to the Club Competitive Committee and reports to the Board of Directors in matters pertaining to Attack and recreational teams and about soccer in general.

Team Coach/Trainer

Each team is assigned one or more Team Coaches/Trainers who are independent contractors under contract with the Club. Each Team coach is responsible for all soccer matters for the assigned team? selection of players, team training, match tactics (player positions, substitutions, playing time etc.), advice on tournaments, level of competition, etc. The trainer works together Director of Coaching to assure consistency within the Club and achieve Club objectives and goals with the Team Manager to ensure team communication and program coordination.

The Team Coach/Trainer's responsibilities include the following:

  1. Standards and Best Practices: Perform all functions relating to coaching (Boys/Girls) (Year, e.g. 93 -Green /White ) team in accordance with the Code of Conduct and seeking to implement the Attack Soccer Best Practices. The Club and the Coach may mutually agree to add additional teams to the coach's responsibilities so long as added teams do not dilute the coach's ability to perform effectively on either team.
  2. Communication with Team: Maintain good communication with all players and team supporters (e.g., player parents or guardians) and team manager. Establish and communicate team and player goals at start of team year. Prepare and communicate progress reports in achieving goals throughout the season. At a minimum, prepare and deliver written player evaluations for every player on the team before the end of the second month of league play.
  3. Communication with Club: Maintain good communication with Head Coaches, Director of Coaching and RSFYSC Board of Directors and keep them informed on both issues that require attention and positive developments.
  4. Reporting and Coordination: Report to the coordinate when necessary with the Head Coach and or Assistant Head Coach to ensure the optimum development of the Competitive Program.
  5. Enhance Skills/Licensing: continue to enhance and improve your soccer and coaching skills, and at a minimum maintain and upgrade coach license as League/Club mandates.
  6. Club Developments: Keep informed of Club issues and developments. Attend coach's meetings as organized by the Club to stay current with policies and develop relationships with the coaching staff. Communicate with other coaches in the Club about issues or developments of which they should be aware (e.g. developments in their age groups, positives or negatives about tournaments).
  7. Act as an ambassador for the Club when interfacing with parents, players and local community, among other thing, be enthusiastic about the team that you coach, the Club and soccer generally.
  8. Act in an exemplary fashion in all interactions with other clubs, referees
    and league officials.
